Many public safety groups and insurance companies work hard to compile data and publish reports about the safety of our nation's public roads and highways. In an annual report published by Allstate Insurance, the insurance company ranked the largest 200 U.S. cities for America's Best Drivers Report. For 2012, Sioux Falls, South Dakota ranked number one. Washington, DC ranked at the bottom of the list. Of course, these statistics fell short in many ways, particularly in the fact that Allstate only used crash data from their policyholders. As they only insure roughly 10 percent of U.S. drivers, they naturally missed out on a large portion of America's population. With these shortcomings, one organization wondered what city really had the worst drivers.
In a recent investigation conducted by Slate – an online magazine founded in 1996 – one of the organizations "chief explainers" amassed data to examine insurance, mileage, and accident reports. The magazine found that Miami, far and above, was home to one of the most hostile and dangerous traffic environments. According the Slate, Miami ranked first in automotive fatalities, first in pedestrian strikes, and first in aggressive / obscene driver behavior.
Although the investigation wasn't one of the most scientific or professional case studies, it was one based on real data and real word of mouth. While saying Miami is home to the nation's worst drivers can still be a statement up for debate, there is no denying the fact that roads and highways in Miami are far from what one would call safe or friendly. Other studies and statistics back up these facts, and upon closer look, Miami does prove to be a city that ranks high for auto accidents, injuries, and fatalities. According to crash reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami-Dade County had the most hit and run accidents in the state in 2012 – approximately 35 per day.
Whatever the statistics may reveal, traveling on public roadways will always result in risks and potential dangers. In Miami, these risks may be greater than in other parts of the country.
